10G-SR only works with single-mode fiber (SMF) whereas 10G-LR only supports multimode fiber (MMF). However, 10G-LRM (long reach multimode) is special in allowing operations on both SMF and MMF.
As we know, most existing 1G short distance interfaces are deployed based on 62.5µm OM1 multimode patch cables. The LRM module adopts advanced signal processing at the receiver to make it reach a distance of 220 meters on OM1. Therefore, 10G-LRM provides an ideal solution for upgrading from 1G to 10G. But, remarkably, to reach the max transmission distance of 220m, mode conditioning patch cord is required for OM1 and OM2 fibers.
